Fat severance packages for pedophile priests were «acts of charity»
Don’t let the strange clothes fool you: the person in the photo is not some strange fetish fan, but Timothy Dolan, the New York archbishop famous for his recent statements to the press about gay marriage. «It would be detrimental for the common good… A very violation of natural law» he said in example in this interview, «just perilous.»
If I mention him here is however for another news piece about him, which was mysteriously ignored by most Italian press. According to the New York Times an inspection related to the bankruptcy declared by the Milwaukee archdiocese discovered the evidence that the good religious tried to cover up a scandal happened during his regency, ended in 2009. The same scandal, in fact, which sent the diocese balance in the red: 8,000 child rapes by 100 local priests. This is not a typo – they were really eight thousands, and just in that area.
The holy man’s role was of mediator to facilitate the estrangement of the involved clergymen, who kept receiving their full salary even after conviction. The “severance package” he apparently offered to quickly close the incidents included up to 20,000 dollars, a $1,250 monthly pension benefit and health insurance until they were re-employed. Dolan publicly called this treatment «an act of charity», yet it is more probable that it was a desperate attempt to dissociate the church from the pedophiles in order not to lose insurance coverage against the 23 joint lawsuits which sent it into bankruptcy anyway.
Last Wednesday the Survivor Network of those Abused by Priests victims’ rights association sent an open letter to the new Milwaukee cardinal, asking: «In what other occupation, especially one working with families and operating schools and youth programs, is an employee given a cash bonus for raping and sexually assaulting children?» While you think about the answer, please do remember how perilous gay marriage can be.
