Transgendered citizens now officially recognized in Nepal

My country, Italy, is curently in its last month of its State and regional electoral campaigns. As it frequently happens in more and more countries, sexual discrimination is unfortunately a sort of badge of pride among candidates, as they know that this ensures the support of ignorant and poor people – which is sadly to say the majority.

In this disheartening situation, it is then a wonderful surprise to hear that the Nepalese Home Ministry Bhola Siwakot, has finally completed a process started in 2007 for the recognition of ‘third gendered’ persons civil rights. The most important act will be the immediate amendment of their identity documents, which will reflect their social identity and make their lives easier in all institutional interactions including getting a job or official papers.
